Carol is a dynamic and engaging speaker, executive coach, and author. She brings a refreshing perspective to each conversation whether it is with large, medium, or small groups. She expertly teaches strategies and techniques for greater work/life balance with her own unique blend of encouragement and hope. Carol is the Founder and CEO of the Wholistic Coaching Coalition and Wholistic Woman Retreats. Within this role she collaborates with other professional coaches to host a variety of original retreats that provide fun, enriching, and supportive experiences for women to grow their whole selves: body, heart, mind, and spirit. This is a community of women who desire to be their best, dedicated to lifelong learning, and ongoing personal and professional development while also accepting that we each have imperfections and are a work-in-progress. Carol is also the author of a unique coaching book, Lost and Found: Discovering Strength in Love and Faith.
Philosophy: Carol sees everyone as a leader; whether it’s leading a business, a committee, a team, a family, or simply leading our own lives. We each make decisions everyday about how we are going to show up and engage in our life. Her development philosophy is grounded in the belief that self-awareness is necessary for personal and professional growth. She recognizes that when we know ourselves well, we are better able to make wise choices and create the results we want at work, and in our lives overall. To that end, Carol uses a variety of tools to develop strengths, personal energy, and self-awareness. This results in more clarity, confidence, and courage to achieve the work/life balance that will bring the success and fulfillment each person desires.
Certifications: Carol is a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) through the International Coaching Federation (ICF).
She is also a certified Master Practitioner of the Energy Leadership Process; a 7 level framework to understand positive and negative energy. This tool helps individuals and teams manage the thoughts, emotions, and actions that are draining and provides a path to consistently achieve more positive, engaging energy.

- When everything in your life feels out of control, including your own body, writing can help. It is one thing you still have control over. It is something you can do anytime, anywhere. It is a safe and private outlet. More than 30 years of research have demonstrated that writing is an effective way to release stress and improve health and well being. Through writing, you can activate your body’s innate healing potential and be an active participant in your own wellness and healing process. Breakout 3: Chair Yoga including Breath and Meditation (Kelli Bethel, PT, C-IAYT, E-RYT 500, Director of Yoga Programs, Center for Integrative Medicine, University of Maryland School of Medicine)
- Yoga is a great practice for everyone, as it can improve flexibility and strength, increases body awareness, decreases stress, and improves mental clarity. Yoga can easily be done in the work place and maybe beneficial in helping to alleviate the impact that prolonged sitting and computer work have on our bodies. The session will focus on the practical application of yoga in the workplace setting. This class will be interactive and will incorporate breath, simple movement and mindfulness. All levels of yoga experience are welcomed.
Coordinating Care (Breakouts in II-2062)
Breakout 1: Caring for the Caregiver (Lisa Harfoot, Social Work Instructor, UMBC)
- The very definition of being a caregiver is to provide care to a child, elder, or person with a chronic illness but, what about self-care as we tackle this demanding role? Over 60 million people in the United States, most of them women between 45 and 60, care on a daily basis for at least one person if not several. Having a higher rate of illness and mental health concerns, caregivers often struggle to find ways to actually balance care for others with care for themselves. This workshop will focus on finding ways to combat the stress and daily pressure of caregiving including respecting the mind-body connection in caregiving, using meditation to support emotional health and the “how to” of locating resources to support the informal care with formal supports.
- Obtaining balance in your life also includes feeling in control of your finances. This session will focus on key aspects of managing one's finances while incorporating issues that are of particular interest to women, including evaluating your financial health, setting financial goals, how to help make your money work for you, and putting it all together to help create your financial plan.
Breakout 3: Caregiving Throughout Life's Stages (Steve Rohde, Deputy Director, Maryland Family Network and Rosemary Allender, Human Resources Coordinator, UMD)
- Child care can be difficult to find and is expensive. We will discuss resources for finding child care, criteria for high quality child care, and ways to collaborate with your child care provider in your child’s growth and development.
Tapping into Technology (Breakouts in II-2032)
Breakout 1: TL;DR – Using Video to Reach Your Audience (Melissa Thomas, Manager, Instructional Design & Delivery, Salisbury University)
- Whether a faculty member sharing content with students or a member of a service unit needing to reach the campus community, this session will explore communicating via video. Mrs. Thomas will explore various tools, techniques and strategies for creating informative video for the classroom or your unit and have them be ADA compliant.
Breakout 2: Organizing the Many Facets of Your Life: Apps That Work (Dr. Ashley Waters, Director,
UMBC-Shady Grove)
- While technology is not the solution to end all work-life-balance struggles, it can certainly be a friend. Dr. Waters will showcase select applications and extensions during this hands-on session and aid participants in finding ways to link the many facets of their lives, including work, home, volunteering, and fun. It is suggested that attendees bring a phone or tablet device to this session.
Breakout 3: Using Social Media to Your Advantage: Strategies for Academics to Enhance Your Online Presence and Protect Your Privacy (Dr. Jessica Vitak, Assistant Professor & Director of the Center for the Advanced Study of Communities and Information, UMCP)
- In this talk, Dr. Vitak will share findings from her research and personal experience in using social media to her professional advantage while maintaining a desired level of privacy. Beyond highlighting what the research says, she will discuss tips and tricks to minimize the amount of time you spend on managing your digital identity and maximize the impact of your online presence.
Community Connections (Breakouts in II-2052)
Breakout 1: YOU are the Greatest Gift: Where Do You Want to Give Your Time? How Do You Want to Grow?(Martina Martin, Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, United Way of Central Maryland)
- As the great Victor Hugo said, “To put everything in balance is good, to put everything in harmony is better.” Regardless of your stage in life, Ms. Martin will help you explore where your passions may lead you, how you want to use your precious gift of time in your community or beyond and how your choices can help drive both personal satisfaction and lasting social impact.
Breakout 2: Creating Your Sounding Board, Kitchen Cabinet or Personal Board of Directors (Mary Angela Baker, Director, Center fore Extended & Lifelong Learning, Salisbury University)
- In today’s complex professional environment, one mentor is no longer sufficient. Successful leaders understand the importance of getting critical information and support from an identified team of trusted coaches, mentors, champions and role models. This workshop will help you strategically identify who you go to for advice and feedback. Remember: Leadership is not a solo activity; you don’t have to go it alone.
Breakout 3: Confessions of Two “Super”women in Recovery (Erricka Bridgeford & Tracee Ford, Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism)
